TODAY Show Brings Back The Custom Of Prima Nocte
Thursday, October 4, 2007 at 10:26AM
(New York, NY) The big TODAY Show Presents A Martha Stewart Wedding has been creating buzz for months. The lucky couple, Cody and Jessica, who were chosen by The TODAY Show’s audience, are preparing to walk down the aisle this Friday. And they are ecstatic about starting their lives together, or at least they were. The executive producers of The TODAY Show revealed a new twist late Wednesday night. The new twist is the resurrection of an old English custom called Prima Nocte, which basically means someone at TODAY other than Jack will share the bed with Jill on the wedding night.
“This is a great twist and a television first!” said TODAY’s Matt Lauer. “And we think the audience is going to have a lot of fun with it, because they’re picking the consummator!”
Martha Stewart’s company did not return our calls, but issued a statement saying, “We had nothing to do with re-introducing Prima Nocte. Our involvement is involves the wedding ceremony and the dress. Once the dress comes off, we’re out of the picture. But we wish Cody and Jessica a long and successful marriage, after Jessica is banged by someone else.”
TODAY’s audience will be able to vote on who will sleep with Jessica until Friday at 10 AM Eastern Standard Time. The early numbers have Matt in the lead followed by Ann Curry, Meredith Vieira and Al Roker. Cody, the real groom, is dead last with only one vote, his own. In fact more people have voted to have Matt sleep with Cody (7).
During a call with Cody and Jessica, Cody was understandably disturbed. “I feel like we’ve been duped by TODAY and NBC. We have to get out of this, and if that means running away to Myanmar, so be it.” Jessica, however, was a bit more pragmatic. “I had a feeling something like this would happen.” When Cody started to freak out, Jessica jumped back in. “Quit seeing the glass as half empty honey and suck it up. I’m the one who’s going to have to do the real work here…Just stay focused on the good things. We’re going to be on TV! We might get a book deal, and we might get a LIFETIME movie out of this!”
But Cody still wants to call off the TODAY wedding. “If I were Cody, I would follow Jessica’s advice and suck it up,” said Leonard Helmsley, a lawyer for NBC. “The contract that Cody and Jessica signed says that if they pull out of the wedding, then they have to pay for everything, and we’re talking a million dollars, themselves.”
With nowhere to go, it would seem like Cody is stuck. But as this article went online, TLN learned that this morning Cody received a note and a package from filmmaker Mel Gibson. The note read, Don’t be afraid to take a stand, my Warrior Poet friend. And inside the box was the sword of William Wallace…Interesting.
